If you only learn two mountain bike tricks, let it be the manual and the wheelie. They involve lifting your front wheel off the ground. Not only will you look cool, but you can easily climb hills and navigate jumps, drops, and obstacles. You have to keep pedaling to pull off a wheelie and balance without pedaling for a manual.
How to Do a Manual
Start riding at a comfortable speed in a low gear. Crouch down and move your weight over the back wheel. Pull up on the handlebars while pushing down on the pedals. This move will get the front wheel off the ground. Gently tap on the back brakes to control your speed. If needed, adjust your body position to stay balanced. Slowly ease off the brake and move your weight forward to put the front wheel back on the ground to finish the trick.
How to Do a Wheelie
Like with a manual, start pedaling at a comfortable pace, but in a medium gear. Get low and shift your weight over the back wheel. While you pedal, quickly lean back and pull up on the handlebars to lift the front wheel. Keep pedaling to stay balanced and keep the wheel in the air. Use the back brake to control your speed and balance. When you want to end the trick, gently apply the back brake and move your weight forward to bring the wheel down.
More Tips
Try the manual and wheelie in a safe, open, flat space. Lift the wheel just a little at first and gradually increase the distance off the ground. Bend your arms and legs to absorb any hits. Don’t look at the ground. Instead, keep your eyes on where you want to go. Practice as much as you can to get better and be able to pull off these tricks at any time, any place.
