There’s a lot of good information about cycling. But there’s also a lot of bad information. So it can be hard to know what’s true and what’s not. We’ve gathered the 10 most common myths so you know what not believe. Share them with everyone you know, and you can all be well-informed in the saddle.

1. Cycling is an expensive hobby.

Sure, there are expensive bikes out there. But there are also cheaper bikes with plenty of great features. So you can find one that fits in your budget. Just remember, the more you spend, the better quality and performance you get.

2. Cycling is dangerous.

Biking is actually one of the safest ways to get around. You’re much more likely to riding in a car or on a motorcycle. Or just crossing the street. Wear a helmet and other protective gear. And always be aware of your surroundings.

3. You have to be in shape to ride.

You don’t have to be super fit to bike. It can actually build your muscles and stamina, and help you reach your fitness goals. If you’re a beginner, start at a slow place on easy roads and trails, and work your way up to the big ones. You’ll be conquering them in no time!

4. The rules of the road don’t apply to you.

You have to follow traffic laws just like motorists. That means riding on the right side of the road, signaling, and obeying road signs. So you can keep yourself and others safe.

5. A bike seat is uncomfortable.

You might to try out a few different seats to find one that works for you. Once you have it, you’ll find that it’s comfortable enough for many riding hours.

6. Narrow tires are faster.

Actually, wider tires are faster. They’re more resilient, comfortable, and aerodynamic when paired with the right rims.

7. You have to tighten all bike parts before you ride.

Don’t over-tighten anything – the smaller the screw, the less torque it can withstand. And don’t tighten the derailleur set screws and shifter barrel adjusters. You could lose access to the upper and lower gears, and the middle gears won’t shift well. Just make sure your wheels, handlebars, and stem are secure at all times.

8. You have to pump your tires to the maximum pressure.

More tire pressure doesn’t make you faster. It’s actually dangerous because it can cause a blowup. Don’t pump them to the maximum PSI. Instead, go at least 5 below, and check them regularly to re-inflate as needed.

9. You can lube up with WD-40.

This should not be used anywhere on your bike. It will strip off the chain oil and crank grease, which are essential to a well-maintained ride. Only use specific chain lube.

10. Helmets last forever.

The sun’s rays can break down the materials over time. A foal shell can also dry out and get brittle with age and repeated hits. It’s smart to buy a new helmet every few years.
