Cycling gear is made from technical fabrics that have two very important jobs – wick away sweat from your body and give you peak performance in the saddle. You have to properly wash and care for your riding kit so it lasts a lifetime. Here’s how to do that.
1. Clean your gear right away.
Salt from your sweat can degrade elastic fibers in the fabrics over time. That means letting your dirty gear sit around for more than a few days can shorten its lifespan. If you ride every day, wash your kit a few times a week so its promptly cleaned.
2. Prep it for the wash.
Zip up your jerseys and shorts and turn them inside out. Fasten hook-and-loop closures and put these pieces in a zipper mesh bag. Separate loads by fabric, as abrasive surfaces can damage synthetic clothing. And most importantly, keep your cycling gear separate from the rest of your laundry. Again, certain materials can get damaged, and dyes can transfer to other items.
3. Use a mild detergent.
A strong chemical-based detergent will degrade the kit’s fabric, and it will quickly wear out. Cleaners with bleach or softeners can also ruin the fabrics. Only use a mild detergent, like OxiClean. This brand can kill bacteria while maintaining the integrity of your gear.
4. Wash in cold water.
Only use cold or tap water in your washing machine. It will keep your gear from shrinking and prevent dark and light colors from bleeding together. Although it’s best to keep these colors separate, just in case. You might think warm or hot water does a better cleaning job, but it can damage synthetic fabrics and even cause shrinkage.
5. Line dry everything.
Dryer heat can break down synthetic fibers and the adhesive from reflective gear. Then your gear won’t last nearly as long as it’s meant to. It can also cause shrinkage, just like warm water, making pieces too small to wear again. Line dry all clothing, including socks. Yes, it takes more time and effort, but it’s more than worth it.
