What’s the difference between front and rear baskets?
Front baskets mount on the handlebars or front rack and are good for lighter loads and accessing your stuff while riding. Rear baskets attach to a rear rack, don't affect steering as much, and can carry more weight.
How much weight can a bike basket carry?
Weight limits vary. Front baskets usually carry 10-20 pounds, while rear baskets can carry a lot more, depending on the rack and basket design. Since rear baskets are usually placed directly on top of the rear rack, the weight limit is more about how much your rear rack and bike frame can support.
Do I need a rack to install a basket?
For rear baskets, you'll typically need a rack to install them on. For front baskets, the most common designs attached directly to the bike's handlebars, but there are also designs that are meant to be installed on a front rack.
Can I use a bike basket to carry a pet?
If your pet is comfortable with riding on a basket and is within the weight limit, certainly. If your pet comes with you often, you might want to look at baskets designed specifically for pets that have harness attachment points, padding, and enclosures to keep your furry friend secure.
Are bike baskets removable?
Yes, pretty much all bike baskets are designed so they can easily be removed and installed with clips or some other quick release mechanism that doesn't require any tools.
Will a bike basket affect how my bike handles?
Yes. A loaded front basket can affect steering and balance. You'll need to be more careful when steering if you have a lot of weight on the handlebars. A heavy rear basket will shift the center of gravity back, but usually doesn't affect steering very much. Since rear baskets are installed on top of the rack, the weight is higher up than with pannier bags, which you can notice when turning corners. If your bike already has a seat that's far back in the rear and you add a lot of weight on the rear rack, you may notice you have less grip on the front tire, especially when going uphill. But overall, rear baskets are easier to get used to quickly.
How do I secure items inside a bike basket?
Cargo nets and bungee cords are great option to keep almost anything in place inside a bike basket. If you have a lot of small items, put them inside a bag first and then put that inside the basket so the bungee cords can do their job.
