Key Suspension Components
Front Suspension Fork
The most visible part of a bike’s suspension system. Found on mountain bikes and some gravel bikes, the fork includes stanchions (the upper tubes), lowers, and internal damping and air spring systems that absorb bumps.
Rear Shock
Used in full-suspension bikes, rear shocks smooth out impacts on the rear triangle. They come in air and coil spring versions and often include rebound and compression adjustments for tuning your ride.
Suspension Linkage
A system of pivots and arms connecting the rear shock to the frame. Linkages vary by bike design and affect how the rear suspension compresses under load.
Seals and Bushings
These small parts prevent dirt and moisture from entering the internals of your fork or shock. Worn seals can lead to performance loss and damage over time.
Dampers
Internal cartridges in forks and shocks that control the rate of compression and rebound. High-end dampers offer external adjustments for fine-tuning ride feel and performance.
Springs
Can be either coil (steel) or air. Coil springs offer consistent feel, while air springs are lighter and more adjustable. Many modern forks and shocks use air springs.
Lockout & Adjuster Knobs
Let you control how firm or soft the suspension feels. Lockouts stiffen the fork or shock for climbing or road use, while rebound and compression adjusters fine-tune shock response.
Thru-Axles & Mounting Hardware
Important for securing suspension components to the frame or fork. Rear shocks also require specific mounting hardware based on frame design.
