How to Properly Dress for Your Bike Rides

Published January 27, 2022 | Updated August 14, 2025

Biking requires bike-specific clothing and accessories. All of the pieces are made with special materials and features to improve your comfort and performance in the saddle. This is a list of must-haves for any ride.

Jersey – It’s stretchable, breathable, moisture-wicking, quick-drying, and form-fitting. A longer cut covers your back while you lean over the handlebar. There’s also a front zipper for ventilation, wider-cut shoulders for more room to move, and reflective material for biking at night.

Jacket – You should own multiple jackets for different seasons. Wear one that’s thin or thick, depending on the weather. Waterproof material is needed for rain or snow.

Shorts – They have stretchable fabric for easy pedal movement. Padding between the legs prevents chafing and saddle sores. With gripper elastic on the leg openings to hold them in place.

Pants – They’re stretchy with padding to prevent chafing, just like shorts. If they’re not padded, just wear them over your shorts. You can wear full-length tights instead, or tights under pants on really cold days.

Shoes – Clipless pedals require cleats attached to your cycling shoes. Platform pedals work with regular shoes. You should wear shoe covers and waterproof socks on wet rides to keep your feet warm and dry.

Helmet – This should be worn on every ride to prevent head injuries. There are different helmets for different riding styles. Get one that fits your head, otherwise it won’t serve its intended purpose.

Accessories – Sunglasses or goggles will protect your eyes from UV rays and flying debris. A cap is good insulation for winter rides, and cycling gloves give you better bar grip and shifting power.
