Cross-country bikes are the best choice if you're looking to go long distances, ride to the trailhead, or participate in cross-country races. They provide the most miles for your pedaling and are typically the lightest weight. If you're looking at rolling terrain, smooth, flowy trails, and need the best speed possible, an XC bike is the way to go. They can also be a great fit for backcountry bikepacking. The Santa Cruz Blur is an example of a popular model.
Some XC bikes are hardtails, while most of the high-end models are full suspension, with 100-120mm rear suspension travel and suspension lockout for those times when absolutely optimal efficiency is needed. The bike geometry is also designed for efficient pedaling (not quite Tour de France, but more like a road bike than other mountain bikes) and has a shorter wheelbase for sharper handling.
Cross-country bikes usually have slightly narrower tires compared to other MTBs, for reduced rolling resistance. Their overall more lightweight builds compared to other types of mountain bikes also mean lighter weight brakes and other components.

FAQs
Can I use a cross-country bike for trail riding?
Yes, but with limitations. XC bikes can be used on smoother trails or light singletrack, but they aren’t designed for drops, rock gardens, or very technical features. For more versatility, a trail bike is usually the better choice. On the other hand, some bike models sold as XC bikes are being designed more and more to handle all types of singletrack. Your best bet is to test a bike on the trails you usually ride and see what you think.
Are XC bikes good for beginners?
They can be. It depends on your terrain and goals. If you’re riding smoother, rolling trails and want to focus on fitness and efficiency, start with a cross-country bike. In fact, many people prefer to ride flowing terrain for the long haul and aren't interested in steep or rocky trails, so in that case an XC bike is perfect. If you want to explore more technical trails, handle small drops, and learn descending skills, a trail bike will be more forgiving and fun way to start out.
