Tips for Setting Up Your Mountain Bike for Female & Smaller Riders

Many riders personalize their bike with narrower handlebars, different saddles, shorter cranks, or suspension tuning. Because we build every new bike in-house, many components can be customized before your bike ships, helping you get a setup that feels right from day one.

Seat - Women's saddles are typically shorter and wider than men's. You might want a narrower fit for high-performance riding. Thankfully, the saddle is easy to change out, with tons of options across brands. Shop saddles here.

Handlebars - Most women have narrower shoulders than men. That means they need a narrower handlebar. Again, this is an easily changeable part. You can also shorten most aluminum handlebars to your preferred width. If you're unsure what to buy, get help from your local bike shop. Shop handlebars here.

Grips - Grips come in different thicknesses and the default grip thickness may be unnecessarily large for smaller hands. You might want to swap out the grips if yours feel too large to get your hands around comfortably.

Brake Levers - The brake levers are also usually the same. But some have adjustment screws to lessen the reach. Or you can buy short-reach levers like the Hayes SFL.

Women's Mountain Bike FAQs

Are women's mountain bikes different from men's?

Most premium mountain bike brands no longer build separate men's and women's models. Instead, they design bikes with modern geometry and a wide range of frame sizes so every rider can find the best fit. As a general rule, the entire frame geometry is slightly adapted per size and is not just scaled up or down across the board.

What size mountain bike do I need?

Frame size depends primarily on your height, but riding style and personal preference also matter quite a bit. It's difficult to give a general answer as every bike and every rider is different. Use the manufacturer sizing chart as a guide and feel free to call or message our store for advice for your specific situation, we will be happy to advise.

Is a full suspension bike worth it?

For most riders, full suspension has been the default for a long time. Full suspension bikes provide better traction, improved comfort, and greater control on rough terrain. Hardtails are a smaller market and are mostly chosen by riders focused on fitness riding, who know they'll be sticking with smoother trails, or who prefer the direct feedback and challenge of a hardtail. Hardtails are also generally more affordable so some people choose them due to a limited budget. If you don't already know that you really belong to the hardtail club, we strongly recommend getting a full suspension bike.

Can I customize my bike before it ships?
