SC Tallboy Versions by Model Year

The Santa Cruz Tallboy has evolved steadily since its launch in 2009 when it was one of the first bikes to use 29" wheels. The first-generation Tallboy (2009–2013) introduced the concept of a fast, efficient 29er with full suspension. Tallboy 2 (2013–2016) introduced a size Small for shorter riders and shaved a few grams. With Tallboy 3 (2016–2019), the bike gained more travel and trail capabilities. The fourth generation (2019–2022) introduced a more aggressive geometry, increased travel by 10mm front and rear, and split the model name out between carbon (C) and aluminum (AL) frames, which were both already available on past versions. The 5th generation, launched in 2022, adds features like in-frame storage and advances even further into trail bike territory.

  • 2009–2013: Tallboy 1
  • 2013–2016: Tallboy 2
  • 2016–2019: Tallboy 3
  • 2019–2022: Tallboy 4 (Tallboy 4 C = carbon, Tallboy 4 AL = aluminum)
  • 2022–2023: Tallboy 5 MY23
  • 2023–2024: Tallboy 5 MY24
  • 2024–2025: Tallboy 5 MY25

From 2012 to 2015, the Tallboy LT (for Long Travel) was also available, but don't get confused: the LT was a totally different bike. While the regular Tallboy started out as a cross-country bike, the LT was all about riding adrenaline-inducing terrain like 6 foot drops and steep rock faces.

FAQs

What type of riding is the Tallboy designed for?

The Tallboy is a short-travel 29er trail bike, ideal for riders who want a fast, efficient climber that still feels confident on rough descents. It blends cross-country efficiency with trail geometry and is best suited for aggressive downcountry and all-day trail rides.

How much travel does the Tallboy have?

The Tallboy features 120mm of rear travel and 130mm of front travel, using Santa Cruz's VPP™ (Virtual Pivot Point) suspension for a balance of pedaling efficiency and descending capability.

What frame materials are available?

The Tallboy comes in two carbon frame options: Carbon C and the lighter, stiffer Carbon CC. Both offer the same geometry and strength, with CC being slightly lighter and found on higher-end builds.

Does the Tallboy have internal storage?

Yes. The Tallboy features Santa Cruz’s Glovebox—an integrated downtube storage compartment that comes with a tool wallet and tube purse for carrying essentials inside the frame.

What wheel size does the Tallboy use?

The Tallboy uses 29-inch wheels front and rear, providing fast rolling speed, better rollover, and efficient climbing performance.

Can I adjust the geometry on the Tallboy?

Yes. The Tallboy features a flip chip in the lower link shock mount, which allows you to fine-tune the geometry for either a lower/slacker or higher/steeper setup, depending on riding style and terrain.

Is the Tallboy compatible with coil shocks?

No. The Tallboy is designed specifically around air shocks for lightweight performance and tuning consistency, and it is not optimized for coil shock compatibility.

What are the main differences between build options?

Builds vary mainly by drivetrain (GX AXS, X0 AXS, XX AXS), frame material (Carbon C vs CC), wheelset (Reserve carbon vs alloy), and suspension components. Higher-end builds come with lighter parts and electronic shifting.
